Low-carb only cure for obesity - Malhotra

Thursday April 23rd, 2015

Too many carbs in the diet are the main cause of the UK's obesity outbreak, according to an outspoken cardiologist today.

Physical activity is important - but is not the main cause of growing obesity, according to Dr Aseem Malhotra, of Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey.

Not even athletes can "out-run" a bad diet, he says.

Calorie-laden diets now generate more ill-health than inactivity, alcohol and smoking together, he says in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

And even a healthy weight is not the answer, he says - as the source of the calories are the problem.

The article seems to back the notion of low-carb diets, popularised through the Atkins diet.

Dr Malhotra writes: “Sugar calories promote fat storage and hunger. Fat calories induce fullness or satiation."

He accuses the food industry of tactics "chillingly" similar to the tobacco industry, adding: “Celebrity endorsements of sugary drinks and the association of junk food and sport must end."

“It’s time to wind back the harms caused by the junk food industry’s public relations machinery. Let’s bust the myth of physical inactivity and obesity. You can’t outrun a bad diet.”

British Journal of Sports Medicine 23 April 2015 [abstract]
