Apps and olive oil for weight control
Tuesday September 23rd, 2014
Everyone should be encouraged to keep active and eat a healthy diet - not just the overweight, according to new UK guidelines issued today.
All
adults need to take steps to maintain a healthy weight - and this can
include using the latest mobile phone apps, according to the National
Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
It calls for people of all ages to undertake more walking and to be more active during leisure time.
It wants the public to cut the amount of leisure time spent in front of screens.
And it suggests Britain switches its eating to the so-called Mediterranean diet, based on fish, olive oil, vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains.
Its guidance also calls for people to stop taking drinks containing sugar.
NICE says people can use apps on mobile phones and tablets designed to help them track food intake, physical activity and weight.
Professor Mike Kelly, from NICE, said: Obesity rates have nearly doubled over the last ten years and continue to be a huge concern for local authorities and the health service in England.
The general rule for maintaining a healthy weight is that energy intake through food and drink should not exceed energy output from daily activity. We all know we should probably take the stairs rather than the lift, cut down on TV time, eat more healthily and drink less alcohol."
