Three times a week enough for women's hearts
Tuesday February 17th, 2015
Middle-aged women need to be active "a few times" a week to keep their risk of diseases of the heart and circulation down, researchers reported last night.
But
exercising more than three times a week may offer few extra benefits for
the heart, according to the Oxford University, UK, study.
Researchers found that strenuous physical activity two to three times a week cut the risk of heart disease, stroke and blood clotting by 20%.
The findings come from an analysis of some 1.1 million healthy British women who have been taking part in research since the end of the last century.
They have been reported in the journal Circulation.
Researcher Dr Miranda Armstrong said: "Inactive middle-aged women should try to do some activity regularly.
"However, to prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, women don't need to do very frequent activity as this seems to provide little additional benefit above that of moderately frequent activity."
