Festival warning on monkeypox

Monkeypox could spread rapidly through Europe during the coming summer festival season, the World Health Organization has warned.

The virus has now been found in 11 countries outside Africa, eight of them in Europe, including the UK, where 20 cases have been found. In total WHO reported 80 confirmed cases and 50 more under investigation.

Health officials say the virus seems to be largely spreading through sexual activity between men.

WHO warned the disease would be most severe for young children, pregnant women and immunocompromised people. It said most of those infected will recover in a few weeks without treatment.

Europe regional director Dr Hans Henri Kluge said: “As we enter the summer season in the European Region, with mass gatherings, festivals and parties, I am concerned that transmission could accelerate, as the cases currently being detected are among those engaging in sexual activity, and the symptoms are unfamiliar to many.

“Hand and respiratory hygiene, along with personal protective equipment and adequate isolation of suspected and confirmed cases are also critical to reduce transmission in healthcare settings – the measures we have all been following for COVID-19.”
