New drive to report drug adverse events

A new drive has been launched to encourage patients to report side-effects from drugs and medical devices.

British regulators have launched their initiative as part of a European-wide drive to increase patient reporting of potential adverse events.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency is running its campaign mostly over social media this week.

It says that even with new on-line reporting systems, there is still under-reporting of adverse events.

The European project is known as Strengthening Collaboration for Operating Pharmacovigilance in Europe.

Mick Foy, from the MHRA, said: “The most important part of our work is making sure the medicines you and your family take are effective and acceptably safe.

“Our campaign will help the public, patients and healthcare professionals report potential side effects and have confidence that their reports are making a difference.

“You can help make medicines safer by reporting any suspected side effects easily and quickly online through the Yellow Card Scheme.”
