The world needs to step up efforts to prevent HIV infections, an international conference heard yesterday.
Experts and campaigners gathered in Durban, South Africa, for the International AIDS Conference.
The World Health Organisation warned that the epidemic of disease is "re-emerging" in some places.
This includes among some urban populations of gay men – and among teenaged girls in large parts of Africa where the remain "particularly vulnerable and affected."
WHO said this was one of four key challenges to achieving the aim of eliminating AIDS by 2030.
It warned of the emergence of resistance to antiretroviral drugs – and it pointed to the need for sustainable financing of the global response.
The fourth challenge was to continue scaling up access to HIV treatment, WHO said.
WHO director general Dr Margaret Chan said: “The enormous progress on HIV, particularly on treatment, is one of the big public health success stories of the century.
“But this is no time for complacency. If the world is to achieve its goal of ending AIDS by 2030, it must rapidly expand and intensify its efforts.”
