Liquid aspirin key to brain tumour breakthrough

A drug which contains liquid aspirin could prove to be a "ground-breaking" treatment for brain tumour, British researchers have reported.

The formulation contains aspirin and two other drugs and will have increased ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, according to researchers at the University of Portsmouth, UK.

The work was being unveiled today at a brain tumour research conference in Poland by Professor Geoff Pilkington and Dr Richard Hill.

The researchers say the drug, IP1867B, could be highly effective against glioblastoma, according to their research.

The laboratory tests on cancer cells suggested the treatment was ten times more effective than any combination of current drugs.

Sue Farrington Smith, chief executive of Brain Tumour Research, said: “This is a potential game-changer for research into brain tumours and clearly shows what sustainable research is able to achieve.

"It is science like this that will enable us to eventually find a cure for this devastating disease which kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.”
