Pregnant women should not fly after 37 weeks, according to guidance issued today.
And if they are carrying twins they should avoid air travel after the 32nd week of pregnancy.
Obstetricians say the advice is aimed at ensuring women do not go into labour during a flight.
According to the advice issued by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, some airlines may request women do not fly at an earlier stage of pregnancy.
The advice also tells women how to avoid deep vein thrombosis during flights of longer than four hours – suggesting loose clothing, comfortable shoes and regular walks around the plain together with exercises on the eat.
Philippa Marsden, from the college, said: “To help decide whether or not to fly, women should think about how many weeks pregnant they will be, what facilities are available at their destination and whether it will increase their risk of medical problems.
"It is important to discuss any health issues or pregnancy complications with your midwife or doctor before you fly.”
