Decaf drinking ‘good’ for liver

Drinking decaffeinated coffee may be good for the liver, according to a new study.

US researchers found that decaf coffee appeared as effective as ordinary coffee in improving liver health.

Researchers studied several enzyme markers of liver health for their research reported in the journal Hepatology.

Researcher Dr Qian Xiao, from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, said the findings were the first to establish that decaf coffee was as closely linked to liver health as ordinary coffee.

Researchers studied nearly 28,000 people, asking them about their consumption of coffee over a 24-hour period.

Dr Xiao said: “Our findings link total and decaffeinated coffee intake to lower liver enzyme levels. These data suggest that ingredients in coffee, other than caffeine, may promote liver health.

"Further studies are needed to identify these components.”
