Probiotics to counteract obesity

Yoghurt-style foods may help protect obese people from one of the most dangerous complications of their problem, according to Spanish researchers.

The findings come from laboratory studies of probiotics that included three particular strains of organism.

Researchers said consuming the probiotics might help protect obese people from fatty liver disease.

The substances had already been tested on healthy volunteers before the laboratory studies – demonstrating they are safe for humans.

The researchers at the University of Granada tested the effects of the probiotics on obese rats.

They used three organisms – Lactobacillus paracasei CNCM I-4034, Bifidobacterium breve CNCM I-4035 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036.

Reporting in PLoS One, the researchers, led by Julio Plaza-Diaz, say the probiotics will not cure fatty liver disease but can help limit its effects.
