The number of victims of the Middle Eastern camel virus increased dramatically yesterday as the Saudi authorities reported more than 100 extra victims.
The latest victims were identified from a study of hospital records, although most illnesses have occurred since March.
Out of 113 new cases, some 34 patients died and three were still in hospital.
And 42 of the victims were health-care workers, of whom two died.
The latest cases bring the number of deaths linked to MERS-CoV to 286 and the total number of infections to 820.
A World Health Organisation spokesman said: "Based on the current situation and available information, WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for acute respiratory infections and to carefully review any unusual patterns."
WHO says travellers should avoid close contact with animals, especially camels, and should avoid drinking raw camel milk or camel urine.
