Depression and serious stress affect as many as one in three people in the work-place, campaigners claimed today.
The findings were released for Depression Awareness Week.
The Depression Alliance called on employers to take action to support affected staff.
Its findings come from a survey of some 1,200 people.
It said that a third of people struggle to cope at work because of depression, stress or burn out.
And 83% of these experienced isolation or loneliness as a result. The survey was conducted by market researchers TNS Omnibus.
Alliance chief executive Emer O’Neill said: "Depression is the biggest mental health challenge among working-age people and often leads to considerable loneliness and isolation at work.
"However, many companies aren’t properly equipped to manage employees who suffer from depression so providing support to these individuals in the workplace is essential."
