Child TB drive launched

A new drive to save children from the scourge of TB was launched yesterday.

More than 200 children a day globally die from the disease every day, according to the World Health Organisation.

WHO says many children are not diagnosed but that at least 10% of TB patients are children.

It has now secured some 120 million dollars a year for the project to improve detection and treatment for children.

Yesterday it set out a "roadmap" to achieve these aims.

Dr Lucica Ditiu, of the Stop TB Partnership, said: “If a small child can summon the bravery to complete a six-month TB treatment, the global community must be similarly brave in its ambitions to defeat the epidemic."

Nicholas Alipui, of UNICEF, added: “Far too many children with tuberculosis are not getting the treatment they need. Most of these children live in the poorest, most vulnerable households.

"It is wrong that any children should die for want of a simple, affordable cure, especially where there are community-based options to deliver life-saving interventions.”
