Chinese medicine in UK cancer tests

British doctors are set to conduct trials of a powerful Chinese traditional medicine on cancer patients, it has been announced.

Researchers at Cardiff University Medical School, Wales, plan to combine the Chinese formula with conventional treatments.

The treatment they will test, Yangzheng Xiaoji, contains 14 herbs.

The Cardiff researchers say their laboratory studies show the formula may be able to stop the spread of cancer cells.

Professor Wen Jiang, from Cardiff University, is director of the Cardiff University-Peking University Joint Cancer Institute in the city.

He has reported the latest research at the European Cancer Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

He said the researchers were hoping to start clinical trials for lung cancer and other kinds of cancer.

He said: "The formula has been shown to be beneficial to patients with certain solid tumours, when used alone and in conventional therapies, such as chemotherapy.

"It suggests that combining the formula with conventional as well as new therapies could hold the key to developing new treatments for cancer patients."
