Measles cases in England are still running at record levels – in spite of the success of the nationwide vaccination catch-up drive, according to figures published yesterday.
Some 188 people succumbed to the virus in May – more than 100 fewer than in April.
But Public Health England said the number of infections is still at its highest this year in 20 years.
It said it was "too soon to be sure" that the vaccination programme had stemmed the spread of the disease.
It called for an additional 120,000 children aged ten to 16 to undergo their first dose of measles vaccination.
Dr Mary Ramsay, of Public Health England, said: “Thanks to the hard work of local health teams we are making good progress towards the 95 percent target, but there still remains a large number of 10-16 year olds, together with many younger children and adults who are under-vaccinated.
"The programme will continue until we reach as many children as possible in the age groups most affected."
