Awareness week seeks to aid women

Gynaecologists have backed efforts to raise awareness of the effects of endometriosis on women.

The problem affects some 1.5 million women and this week has been declared Endometriosis Awareness Week.

As part of the week, Endometriosis UK is conducting a survey among patients to try to pin down causes of delays in diagnosis.

Bruce Ramsay, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: “Endometriosis is a very common condition, however, for many women it can take years to get a diagnosis. This is because there is no simple non-invasive test for endometriosis and no one symptom or set of symptoms can definitely confirm the condition."

He added: "Endometriosis can affect many aspects of a woman’s life including her general physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, fertility and daily routine.

"It is therefore important that women provide their doctor with as much information as possible about their symptoms to speed up the diagnosis process and enable women, alongside the help and advice of healthcare professionals, to decide on the best treatment options."
