October goes pink

Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins today, backed by dozens of organisations working to tackle the disease.

The month will include a special day for secondary breast cancer – to be held on October 13.

Events for the day will include a "twobby" when activists use Twitter to lobby members of Parliament.

The month begins with news of rapidly improving survival rates for women with breast cancer.

Last week experts predicted a 28% fall in death rates by 2030.

Dr Caitlin Palframan, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “It is great news that death rates from cancer will continue to fall over the next 20 years. These figures highlight that the work of charities, like ours, is vital in the fight against cancer.

"Through raising awareness of the disease, encouraging early detection and researching better treatments, we really are making a difference."
