Cough and flu sufferers may one day get a spray drug to prevent them passing their viruses to others, researchers have revealed.
The drug might also be used on people with dangerous infections such as pneumonia and TB.
Canadian engineers have been involved in studying a potential drug, it has been revealed.
The researchers at the University of Alberta, Canada, developed a simulated cough machine to study a drug developed by university medical researcher Malcolm King.
Now engineers, working with the cough machine, have shown it could almost "completely" prevent droplets from the lung getting into the air.
The work has been reported in the journal Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics.

Britain will be used a vaccine that includes swine flu as well as other seasonal kinds of flu, the Department of Health said.
The department says swine flu remains a threat and has been the most common virus during the winter season in the southern hemisphere.
Director of immunisation Professor David Salisbury said: "Every year people die in this country from complications caused by getting flu; these are deaths that could be prevented and the best protection against flu is to have the jab.
