The joy of spring – in the lab

The spring is known as a time for reproduction – and this applies even in the laboratory, researchers reveal today.

An analysis of human assisted reproduction suggests that the procedures work best after the end of winter – with success rates improving by about 45 per cent.

The findings come from Brazil and are being reported to an international conference in Germany today.

Researchers analysed the success of work with nearly 2,000 women, spread throughout the year, at a clinic in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Researcher Dr Daniela Braga said: "This work shows that IVF cycles may have a better outcome during the spring. Our results show a significant difference in spring fertilisation rate, with the fertilisation rate in the spring being almost one and a half-times that of other seasons.

"In practical terms this may mean that if you are having real difficulty in conceiving, it may be better to have an assisted reproduction cycle during this season."

The researchers found increased levels of oestradiol hormones in the spring – and suggest that the increased levels of day-light in the spring may trigger the release of fertility hormones.

The work was being revealed at the World Congress of Fertility and Sterility in Munich.
