Alarm over vaccine batches

British watchdogs have sought to assure parents about meningitis vaccines after the recall of two batches.

GPs were asked to return vaccines from the batches of Menjugate Kit, made by Novartis after it was discovered there was a risk of bacterial contamination.

Regulators said there was no evidence of contamination of vaccines in Britain.

The vaccines were manufactured in Italy and it has been discovered that some became contaminated during air travel with the staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

They had been sent by air to North America to ensure they would remain sterile under conditions of varying air pressure during flight.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said the British vaccines had been transported by road.

Agency chief executive Professor Kent Woods said: "Parents should not be concerned over this recall, as there is currently no evidence to show that UK children have been put at risk. Novartis are recalling these two batches as a precautionary measure.

"However, if parents are in any way concerned, then they can contact their doctor about the issue or contact NHS Direct."
