Portable music players could revolutionise fitness levels by helping boost endurance and satisfaction from exercise, British researchers reported yesterday.
Brunel University researchers say that music can improve exercise endurance by 15 per cent.
The findings are to face another test at the weekend – when a special half-marathon is to be run in Greenwich, London.
Some 12,500 runners are booked in for the run – which will be accompanied by "scientifically selected" music.
Some 30 volunteers took part in the initial study, running on a treadmill to the sounds of Queen, Madonna and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
The findings are to be published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology.
Researcher Dr Costas Karageorghis has selected the music for Sunday’s run.
He said: "The synchronous application of music resulted in much higher endurance while the motivational qualities of the music impacted significantly on the interpretation of fatigue symptoms right up to the point of voluntary exhaustion."
