Pensioners urged to avoid Hajj
Monday July 20th, 2015
Pensioners should not travel to Saudi Arabia this year to take place in the annual Hajj pilgrimage, according to new advice.
Along with pregnant women and those with chronic diseases, people over the age of 65 may be vulnerable to the risks of infection during the pilgrimage, according to Public Health England.
The agency says the advice is given in response to international outbreaks of disease.
Saudi Arabia is currently the centre of an outbreak of the fatal respiratory diseases MERS-CoV, which is spread by camels.
The agency's advice says the risk to British travellers remains "very low" - but that travellers should wear masks in public places.
* About two million Muslims are expected to travel to Mecca for the Hajj in September.
