Allergy victims "trapped" - Euro-conference
Monday June 9th, 2014
People with allergy are "trapped" by the disease, a major European conference has heard.
Allergy
specialists launched a campaign to alert Europeans to the lifestyle restrictions
placed by allergies.
As many as one in three children are thought to suffer from some kind of allergy.
And about 20% of sufferers have life-threatening conditions such as asthma or serious reactions that cause anaphylactic shock.
The campaign was launched at the conference of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Copenhagen, Denmark.
To back up the campaign, a volunteer stood in a large box in the centre of Copenhagen with the word "allergy" written on it.
President Nikolaos Papadopoulos said: "Allergy is a condition that affects people's lifestyle and ability to work.
"An allergic person can fear insignificant things with which we come into contact on a daily basis, such as plants, pets, insects, food or drugs, and this leads them to feel 'trapped' in their condition."
