Professor poses pain problem

Thursday March 24th, 2011

An expert nurse is to set out the challenges that health services face in improving treatment of pain.

Pain specialist Eloise Carr has become a professor and deputy dean at the school of health at Bournemouth University.

She sees two key challenges. One is the "problematic" nature of managing pain in hospital.

The second is dealing with chronic pain, such as back pain.

She will be setting out her proposals in her inaugural lecturer next month.

Professor Carr, a leading member of the British Pain Society, said: "The pain and suffering are significant affecting not just individuals but their friends and family profoundly with local and national policies often inadvertently providing a hindrance to good pain management."

She explained: "Despite the advent of new analgesics and innovative methods of drug delivery pain management in hospitals remains problematic."

Professor Carr says many clinical teams have undertaken extensive work in the last two decades to improve the situation - and calls for professionals to learn and work together to improve care.
