Endometrial cancer focus for World Gynecologic Oncology Awareness Day

Health organisations and patients are gearing up for the fourth World GO Day, to raise awareness about gynaecological cancers.

This year’s World Gynecologic Oncology Awareness Day, on September 20, will focus on endometrial cancer and how enjoying a healthy lifestyle and staying physically active are key prevention strategies against the disease.

Events will take place across more than 25 countries and thousands of patients will join more than 60 health organisations, groups of medical professionals and experts for the *Go for action* challenge.

Professor Nicole Concin, president of European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), said: “The goal of our challenge is simple: to inspire and motivate women all around the world to improve their health by incorporating regular physical activity into their daily routine, for instance, by Nordic walking, light jogging, swimming, cycling, whatever they enjoy.”

ENGAGe co-chair Professor Jalid Sehouli added: “Today, thanks to our better scientific understanding, new surgical and medical therapy, options are changing the standard of care for women with endometrial cancer. Nevertheless, many women don’t have access to these innovations, so we want to use World GO Day to increase awareness.”

Ovarian, uterine, cervical and other gynaecological cancers are among the most common cancers affecting women, but Prof Sehouli said women often do not know the symptoms or may be too embarrassed to consult their doctor.

“The incidence of endometrial cancer is rising. Lifestyle and genetics can affect the risk of developing endometrial cancer. We’d therefore like to use World GO Day to raise awareness and highlight the importance of physical activity, nutrition and genetic counselling,” he added.
