Many parents are unaware of basic measures that can help reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, according to a survey published today.
Parents should be advised to sleep a baby on its back – but today’s survey finds that 55% of patients are unsure whether they can put a baby on its side.
And 38% are unsure whether they can sleep a baby on its front, according to the survey of 500 parents.
The on-line survey was commissioned by The Lullaby Trust, which says that sleeping a baby on its front reduces the risk of SIDS by more than 80%.
The Trust is running a Safer Sleep Week this week. Its slogan is ABC – "always sleep your baby on their back in a clear cot or sleep space."
Francine Bates, from the Trust, said: “25 years after the Back to Sleep campaign, the survey results have shown us we need to go back to basics.
"Following the ABCs as part of a baby’s routine for every sleep day and night is a simple way to help protect them from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and allow parents the peace of mind to enjoy this special time with their baby.”
