Ebola over in Liberia

The stricken African country of Liberia is now free of Ebola, it has been announced.

The country’s last victim of the virus was buried on March 28, the World Health Organisation said.

Some 189 health workers lost their lives during the outbreak, which has blighted three west African countries.

By September last year, up to 400 people a week were being infected.

WHO said Liberia remains at risk because of the continuing outbreak in the neighbouring countries of Guinea and Sierra Leone.

WHO said strong political leadership and good community engagement in the country’s villages played a key role in Liberia’s success in beating the virus.

A WHO spokesman said: "It is a tribute to the government and people of Liberia that determination to defeat Ebola never wavered, courage never faltered. Doctors and nurses continued to treat patients, even when supplies of personal protective equipment and training in its safe use were inadequate."

* Liberia has launched a massive child vaccination campaign aimed at protecting more than 600,000 children against polio and measles.
