Some women with breast cancer may benefit from a highly restricted diet, according to a new study.
The theory has not yet been tested on women patients – but has emerged from laboratory studies.
Researchers found one of the most aggressive forms of cancer is may be less likely to spread when patients have their food consumption cut.
Mice in the research had their food intake cut by 30%.
The study, reported in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment involved the triple negative form of breast cancer.
Researcher Dr Nicole Simone, of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA, is now planning to test the effects of calorie restriction on human patients.
She said that weight is already known to be a problem in treatment – as on average women put on 10 pounds during their first year of treatment and the weight gain can make treatments less effective.
