Emergency pill safe for obese

Obese women can safely use emergency contraceptives, according to regulators.

The benefits of two kinds of contraceptive outweigh the risks, even for obese women, according to the findings of a European review.

Experts from the European Medicines Agency said there was no evidence that obesity prevented the contraceptives from working.

The findings were backed yesterday by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

They refer to Levonelle and ellaOne.

Dr Sarah Branch, from the MHRA, said: "Women should be reassured that regardless of their body weight, emergency contraceptives can still be used to prevent unintended pregnancy.

"Women should continue to take these products as early as possible after contraception failure or unprotected sexual intercourse."
