Heatwave alert

The British National Health Service has been placed on alert for heatwave conditions over the next few days.

The heatwave is set to include southern England and the Midlands, according to the Met Office.

In London temperatures are set to reach 30C (18F) tomorrow.

Public Health England said NHS organisations should get out their heatwave plans.

The plans set out how vulnerable people, such as the elderly and people with chronic sickness, will be kept save.

Dr Paul Cosford, of Public Health England, urged the public to stay out of the heat at the hottest times of day.

And he warned of risks to people of Muslim faith, who may be fasting during Ramadan.

Dr Cosford said: "While many people enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses."
