China bird flu spreads

The outbreak of a new bird flu virus in China is spreading, health officials warned yesterday.

Some ten new human patients have been diagnosed with the H7N9 virus.

China has now reported ten deaths and a total of 38 patients.

All the cases have been found in three regions of China, offering hope that the virus is not spreading geographically. These are Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

And officials say there is no sign of it being infectious between humans.

Government officials say they are still investigating the source of the virus, although some reports have linked it to pigeons.

A spokesman for the World Health Organisation said: "At this time there is no evidence of ongoing human-to-human transmission.

"WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied."
