Bird flu deaths aggravate alarm

The outbreak of a mysterious bird flu in China intensified yesterday as three new deaths were announced.

International observers are watching the outbreak anxiously for fear it is being spread by migratory birds that might carry the virus worldwide.

The virus has killed people over a wide area of China but observers have found no evidence it is being spread by human contact nor any evidence of other links between victims.

The virus has now killed people aged 38,48, and 64, one in Shanghai and two in the province of Zhejiang.

It brings the total number of deaths to five with another six cases of patients seriously ill from the H7N9 virus.

A spokesman for the World Health Organisation said: "The Chinese government is actively investigating this event and has heightened disease surveillance.

"WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied."
