People who live by the sea feel they enjoy better health than others, according to a UK study published last night.
And the most deprived people benefit the most from a coastal location, according to the study by the Peninsula Medial College in Devon.
The findings are based on what Britons told the collectors of the last English census in 2001. This involved more than 48 million people.
The census asked people who they felt about their health and whether it was good, fairly good or not good.
The researchers say their findings may simple reflect the calming effect of waves and sea air.
Researcher Dr Ben Wheeler said other research suggested that people found a visit to the coast left them feeling calmer than a trip to the countryside or an urban park.
Dr Wheeler said: "We know that people usually have a good time when they go to the beach, but there is strikingly little evidence of how spending time at the coast can affect health and wellbeing.
"By analysing data for the whole population, our research suggests that there is a positive effect, although this type of study cannot prove cause and effect
"We need to carry out more sophisticated studies to try to unravel the reasons that may explain the relationship we’re seeing. If the evidence is there, it might help to provide governments with the guidance necessary to wisely and sustainably use our valuable coasts to help improve the health of the whole UK population."
