Warning issued over unlicensed herbal weight loss products

A UK watchdog is urging dieters to stop taking unlicensed Payouji tea and Pai You Guo Slim Capsules because of health concerns.

The British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued the warning because of the danger of possible side-effects from taking the weight loss herbal products, which contain an undeclared pharmaceutical active ingredient, called sibutramine.

Sibutramine has been withdrawn in the European Union on safety grounds and any product containing it is considered harmful to public health.

Uncontrolled use of the substance can result in serious side-effects such as high blood pressure, seizures, heart attack or stroke. It may also interact with other prescription medication.

Richard Woodfield, head of the MHRA herbal policy, urged anyone who is using Payouji tea or Pai You Guo Slim Capsules to stop taking them and visit their GP immediately with the details contained in these products.

“People need to be aware that Payouji tea and Pai You Guo Slim Capsules are unlicensed herbal medicines and therefore have not met assured standards,” he said.

Registered and licensed herbal medicines can be identified by the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) on the label, added Mr Woodfield.

He said anyone suffering from any side-effects to herbal products should report them to the MHRA via the Yellow Card Scheme.
