Africa Ebola preparations stepped up

Friday June 8th, 2018

The World Health Organisation is stepping up preparations in nine countries at risk from the current Ebola outbreak in Africa, it has announced.

The countries all border the Democratic Republic of Congo, the centre of the latest outbreak.

Some £15 million dollars is being put into the work, WHO said.

There have been 25 confirmed deaths and another 31 cases of infection recorded in the Equateur Province of the DRC.

The outbreak has seen the use of mass vaccination against Ebola tested for the first time.

The new preparations involve Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

A WHO spokesperson said: “The objective of the plan is to help the countries to assess and identify their existing capacities as well as their gaps, to prevent, rapidly detect, investigate and respond to Ebola.

“The plan also provides countries with a minimum standard package of what needs to be in place to respond to a first Ebola case; and to continuously monitor their preparedness and readiness.”
