Commercial weight loss programme prevents diabetes

Tuesday October 17th, 2017

A commercial weight loss company was dramatically successful in preventing the development of type 2 diabetes in high risk patients, researchers report today.

Some 115 patients in Bromley, London, took part in the study, which saw them referred to Weight Watchers to help with weight loss.

During the 12 months of the study, some 38% of patients achieved normal glycaemic levels. Some 3% developed type 2 diabetes.

There was an average fall in HbA1c of 2.84 mmol/mol.

The findings are reported today in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care.

The researchers say that 115 patients took part in the programme out of 149 eligible patients.

The Royal College of GPs said weight loss programmes would not work for all patients.

Chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said: “Today’s findings that GP referrals to weight management programmes appear to have prevented patients from developing type 2 diabetes are both positive and encouraging - and are certainly something for commissioners to consider.

“However, organised weight management programmes won’t work for everyone so GPs and our teams will continue to play a pivotal role in managing the vast amount of diabetes care in the community, advising patients about lifestyle changes that can improve their health, so we must ensure that general practice has the investment it needs, and the appropriate number of GPs and nursing colleagues, to do this properly.”
