On-line pharmacy crack-down continues

Thursday April 6th, 2017

Regulators are continuing a drive against on-line pharmacies, it was announced today.

The move was backed by the Royal College of GPs, which said it opposed "laissez faire" dispensing of prescriptions.

The Care Quality Commission announced action against four on-line pharmacies, suspending the registration of one, Dr Matt Ltd, and taking other action against three others.

It found that Dr Matt was spending as little as 17 second reviewing patient questionnaires. Some 46 on-line services are registered in England.

General practice chief inspector Professor Steve Field said: “This might be a new way of working but the risks and responsibilities need to be understood and action taken in response. As the regulator of health and social care, we will continue to play our part in guaranteeing this.”

He added: "We expect the same standards of quality and safety to be met as we would see in more traditional GP settings – this is exactly what people deserve.

“Online companies, and the people working for them, have a duty to protect the people seeking their support. They must follow relevant guidance and best practice to make sure that they know who they are communicating with, how medicines fit in with their medical history, and that their GP is made aware of any prescribing decisions."

RCGP chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard said: “We do understand why patients might think getting their medication online is convenient, but they also need to be confident that these services are safe and follow strict remote prescribing rules outlined by the General Medical Council.”
