Millions pledged to tackle Ebola

Friday October 3rd, 2014

Governments pledged tens of millions of pounds and dozens of workers to help tackle the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone yesterday - amid new reports of health services in disarray.

British nurse Will Pooley, a survivor of the virus, was at the centre of the Defeating Ebola in Sierra Leone conference in London.

Britain has agreed to coordinate the relief effort in Sierra Leone.

Speaking to reporters Mr Pooley spoke of the death of a brother and sister.

He said: "She still had a very puzzled expression on her face and she wasn't breathing. So I put her in a bag and left her next to her brother. She was a beautiful little girl.

"So, my specific fear is that the horror and the misery of these deaths, really fill a well of my despair.

"And I just don't know what happens if that's repeated a million times. And so I say, at all costs, we can't let that happen."

Mr Pooley has since flown to the US to give blood to help with the treatment of victims, it emerged.

The relief effort now includes £1 million from Comic Relief and 165 health professionals from Cuba, the conference heard.

Germany has pledged up to £54 million, Canada, £18 million and Australia £7.4 millions.
