Ads will expose pizza fat

Monday January 7th, 2013

The British public is set to face a fresh round of graphic advertising about their lifestyle choices, it was announced today.

Government advertising will feature cola bottles packed with sugar cubes and pizzas full of fat.

The healthy eating campaign will be the latest to follow the government's "nudge" policy of trying to persuade the public to make improved choices about their lives.

Last month graphic adverts of cigarettes sprouting cancer cells were launched.

The government is set to claim the cooperation of the food industry in the latest drive - with a range of companies pledging to promote healthy foods.

The move will follow an announcement by Labour shadow health secretary Andy Burnham that he would ban high sugar cereals sold to children.

The British Heart Foundation today called for a "continued, joined-up" approach to healthy eating and physical activity.

Victoria Taylor, from the Foundation, said: "This certainly looks like a tasty partnership between the food industry and Government but we need to make sure it’s not just a flash in the pan.

“We all have a responsibility for the food we eat and cook at home but it’s important we’re supported and encouraged to make healthy choices by our environment.

"What we see on TV, the labels on packaging and the way we learn about food and cooking all play their part and can make a healthy difference to our diets."
