Ear problem myths exposed

Monday February 4th, 2013

Campaigners are hoping to expose a series of "myths" about the hearing problem tinnitus this week.

Tinnitus Awareness Week begins today and the charity Deafness Research UK has produced a list of seven "enduring" myths.

These include the idea that caffeine aggravates the problem and that gingko biloba might help it.

Research has failed to support either story, it says.

Another myth is that people who hear music might be on their way to develop psychiatric problems, it says.

Chief executive Vivienne Michael said: “The difficulty is that all too often we want a magic pill which will cure everything.

“We can’t offer that because tinnitus cases are different and what works for one person may not work for another. The best advice is to try the different strategies available and see which one suits you best.

"While the search for a lasting cure continues, separating myth from magic and fact from fiction is the first step to managing the condition effectively.”
