Meal planning "cuts costs"
Wednesday December 28th, 2011
Better planning of household eating could save families hundreds of pounds a year, it was claimed yesterday.
About
half the savings came from reducing take-away meals, according to a UK-government
backed project.
The programme, put together by Change4Life, also helps households to adopt healthier lifestyles, it was said.
The improvements were established in a project which involved 20 households. They recorded their normal eating habits for a week - and then in a second week followed the advice of Change4Life.
This helped families to snack less than before - and encouraged the eating of more fruit and vegetables. Average weekly savings amounted to £29 a week.
Survey participant Alex Pople, aged 25, from Somerset, UK, said: "Planning ahead really paid off for us, we saved money on our shopping and we didn’t have to make a last-minute decision about what to eat every night."
Public Health Minister Anne Milton said: "Some people might think that eating a balanced diet is more expensive but that does not have to be the case. If we plan ahead we can make better choices and save money too."
