Invest in babies - midwives

Monday April 12th, 2010

Midwives have teamed up with parents organisations to launch their own manifesto for the UK general election.

In the face of pledges of cuts in public spending, the Royal College of Midwives call for investment in maternity services.

Among its eight pledges, the manifesto calls for more involvement of fathers and families in the raising of children.

It calls for improve post-natal care and work to tackle problems of obesity.

RCM general secretary Cathy Warwick said: "These eight pledges focus on some of the key issues in maternity services.

"We need to see continuing increases in midwife numbers and sustained funding for maternity services. Midwives can help to reduce inequalities, they can help to reduce obesity and they can deliver better services such as postnatal care; but they need the numbers and the funding to do it.

"I am delighted that we have the support of a number of other organisations because it emphasises that these issues matter to many, many people."
