Web pharmacy arrests

Thursday March 5th, 2009

British medicines "police" say they have shut down a major illegal internet pharmacy.

Three people were arrested in the Stoke-on-Trent area of England yesterday.

During raids a small "stash" of allegedly fake drugs, worth about 250,000, was found in a Stoke flat - but officials said it was the "tip of the ice-berg" of a multi-million pound business.

The pharmacy was said to be selling steroids, anti-depressants, painkillers and weight and hair loss tablets.

Danny Lee Frost, head of operations of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, said: "The dangers of purchasing medicines online are that you just don't know what you are taking.

"The dosages could be either too high or too low, or worse, the tablet could contain dangerous ingredients such as brick dust from a cement mixer in which it was produced.

"Those involved in these types of dealings do not care about your health. They are only in it for one reason, and that is to make money."
