Nurses celebrate sharps deal
Thursday June 11th, 2009
Nurses are celebrating a European deal aimed at reducing injuries from needles and sharp industries.
Employers and unions have signed an EU wide agreement on policies, training and support for staff.
The deal also calls for moves to replace sharp instruments with safer alternatives.
Yesterday the Royal College of Nursing said it would be pressing for the deal to be given legal force.
Chief executive Dr Peter Carter said: "It is simple - needle policies, appropriate training and investment in safer alternatives to traditional needles can stop these accidents happening in the first place.
"Nurses should also receive full support from their employers when they sustain an injury to prevent the feelings of isolation and anxiety that often accompany such trauma.
"By making these changes and safeguarding the health of all nursing and medical staff, the Council of European Union will be improving patient care in the UK and throughout Europe."
