Quit kit New Year gift for smokers
Monday December 28th, 2009
British smokers seeking to give up for 2010 have been offered a sack full of assistance by the government.
Stress
relief gadgets, a toothbrush and MP3 downloads are among items in the
Quit Kit.
There is also a "will-power assessor" designed to help smokers identify the cues that make them reach fo a cigarette.
Professor Robert West, of the health behaviour research centre, University College, London, said: "One of the top New Year's resolutions each year is to stop smoking and the Quit Kit will help people do this.
"We know that certain triggers and cravings can threaten a successful quit and that people need to find their own personal combination of support and tools to help combat them."
He urged would-be quitters to contact the NHS Stop Smoking line to seek professional help.
As many as 770,000 Britons are thought to have resolved to give up last January - but only five per cent are expected to last a year.
The Quit Kit can be ordered from www.nhs.uk/smokefree or by calling 0800 0 665 826.
Public health minister Gillian Merron said: "The Government has worked with experts and smokers to create a tailored set of tools to help everyone who wants to quit. I hope the Quit Kit will help people stop smoking for good."
